The Mushroom Shelf: Why Medicinal Mushrooms Belong in Your Daily Ritual

Mushrooms have been part of herbal medicine for thousands of years. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, reishi (Ling Zhi) was prized as a tonic for the spirit and longevity, and cordyceps (Dong Chong Xia Cao) was reserved for deep, restorative nourishment. Today, Western herbalists group many of these same fungi with the adaptogens — plants that help the body meet daily stress with more steadiness.

We just got a fresh shipment from Mālama Mushrooms, so it felt like the right time to walk you through everything on our mushroom shelf and why we love working with them.

Why mushrooms matter

  • Immune support. Medicinal mushrooms are rich in beta-glucans and other polysaccharides that have been studied for how they interact with the immune system.*
  • Steady energy, not a spike. Cordyceps and other tonic mushrooms are traditionally used for stamina and vitality — a good pairing with (or replacement for) your morning coffee.*
  • Focus and mood. Lion's mane is loved for mental clarity and cognitive support.*
  • Calm and rest. Reishi is the classic "calm spirit" mushroom, used in TCM to settle the Shen and support restful sleep.*
  • Consistency is the medicine. Mushrooms work best as a daily practice. A spoonful in your tea, cacao or smoothie every day does more than a big dose once in a while.

A note on quality: Look for products made from the fruiting body (the mushroom itself) and extracted — hot water extraction makes the beneficial compounds available to your body. Many cheaper products are mostly mycelium grown on grain, which means more starch and less mushroom.

New arrivals: Mālama Mushrooms

Mālama Mushrooms is a Hawaii-based company making USDA Organic mushroom extracts from 100% fruiting bodies grown on wood — no grain, no mycelium fillers, no added starch. Their powders are steam-extracted for better absorption and third-party lab tested.

8 Mushroom Superfood Mix Extract Powder
Lion's mane, reishi, cordyceps, chaga, maitake, shiitake, tremella and turkey tail in one scoop. Our pick for anyone who wants the full spectrum without buying eight jars. Stir ½–1 tsp into tea, coffee, warm milk or a smoothie.

8 Mushroom Superfood Cacao Mix
The same eight mushrooms blended with organic fair-trade cacao and Ceylon cinnamon. It's unsweetened, so you control the sweetness. Makes a grounding hot chocolate or a gentle coffee replacement.

Lion's Mane Extract Powder
A single-mushroom extract for focus and clarity.* Great in your morning cup when you have deep work ahead.

Superfood Mushroom Matcha
Japanese ceremonial matcha paired with lion's mane. Matcha's calm, steady energy plus lion's mane for focus — a lovely afternoon ritual.*
