Shilajit 101: What It Is, Its Traditional Uses, and How to Take It
Shilajit has become a wellness buzzword lately, but it's actually one of the oldest substances used in traditional medicine — not a new trend at all.
What Is Shilajit?
Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like resin that seeps from rock crevices in high-altitude mountain ranges, most famously the Himalayas. It forms over centuries as plant matter slowly decomposes and gets compressed under mineral-rich rock layers. The result is a dense, dark resin loaded with fulvic acid and dozens of trace minerals.
Its Traditional Roots
Shilajit's use comes primarily out of Ayurvedic medicine, where it's classified as a rasayana — a substance used to support vitality, stamina, and healthy aging over the long term. It's traditionally taken as a daily tonic rather than a quick fix, similar in spirit to how TCM treats certain deep tonics for foundational energy (Jing), even though shilajit itself comes from a distinct Ayurvedic lineage rather than Chinese medicine.
How It's Typically Taken
Resin forms (like the one we carry) are usually taken in small, pea-sized amounts — about the size of a grain of rice to start — dissolved into warm water, tea, or milk rather than eaten straight, since the taste is strong and earthy. Most people start low and adjust from there.
What to Look For When Buying Shilajit
Quality varies a lot in this category. A few things worth checking:
- Purity testing — shilajit is a natural mineral resin, so third-party testing for heavy metals matters.
- Source — authentic high-altitude sourcing (Himalayan, Altai) is part of what you're paying for.
- Form — resin is generally considered more concentrated and less processed than powders or capsules.
What We Carry

Herb To Body: Himalayan Shilajit Resin — $29.50
A high-altitude, purity-tested resin extract — our current in-stock option, in limited quantity.
Other Mineral-Rich Options We Carry
Shilajit's main draw is its natural trace mineral and fulvic acid content. If you like that idea but want something more precisely dosed, or you'd rather skip the resin format altogether, we also carry a line of liquid ionic mineral concentrates that cover similar ground from a different tradition — Western mineral supplementation instead of Ayurvedic resin.

Eidon: Ionic Minerals — Multiple Mineral — $21.58
A broad daily liquid mineral blend (silica, sulfur, boron, magnesium, zinc) aimed at general mineral replenishment and connective tissue support — the closest match to what shilajit is traditionally used for.

Eidon: Ionic Minerals — Calcium — $23.00
A liquid concentrate focused on calcium and related trace minerals for bone support.

Eidon: Ionic Minerals — Immune Support — $23.00
A mineral-based liquid concentrate formulated to support general immune function.
